This is an interactive stimulus for the teaching of Creative Writing to a Stage 5 class.
Remember the game book that one used to read as a child? This book is inspired by those game books, where students would, based on the stimulus given, choose and respond. After a series of short paragraph writings, the book eventually culminates to the writing of a full short story, which is the final summative assessment of this unit.
The scene is inspired by Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko (2001) and each individual stimulus, which made up the entirety of this book, is written provocatively and cleverly, thereby engaging the students.
I have been using this personally for the teaching of Creative Writing and it has been widely appreciated by my students.
To quote some of my students after the completion of the unit:
'I have never enjoyed writing more nor have written so much in my life.'
'I want to be a professional writer now!'
To note: The hyperlink for each of the stimuli in the book takes the reader into a password protected webpage, to ensure the safety of my students. The webpage is essentially a blogging space for the students to post their writings and for me to grade them. If you do not know the password of the page, you could, alternatively, use a similar blogging site or to simply ask your students to write their responses down on paper.
